When I bought my phone through Project Fi last month I checked the box for device protection, which wasn't available at the time (nor was Nexus Protect).
Today I got an enrollment email, and the way it works is for 5 dollars a month you get up to two handset replacements per year (0 deductible) and an extension of the original 1 year warranty for as long as you keep paying a month. Also they send you the replacement before you send in your broken unit.
